BAS: Berthing aid system

BAS: Sistema de Ayuda al Atraque

Prosertek USA developed Dockmoor software, which provide for one of the most advanced Berthing Aid System (BAS).This system provides for monitoring berthing and mooring operations at maritime terminals, providing information to improve operations and guarantee secure ship berthing, facilitating safe and effective operations.

What is the Berthing Aid System (BAS)

BAS is a comprehensive visualisation system to provide real-time data on manoeuvre status. This means that operators have greater information, making it possible to take corrective measures if established limits are surpassed.

The information provided by DockMoor can be viewed through several platforms, such as a digital panel on the dock, remote laptop monitors, a monitor in the control room or through the website with remote access.

Advantages of using a berthing aid system

Using the BAS can translate into important advantages, both for the ports and for the shipowners and workers:

  • A reduction in operational costs and in damage caused to the port, fenders or to the actual ship.
  • Increased control over the safety and general protection of the surroundings.
  • Real-time monitoring and creation of a data register including reports, manoeuvre reproductions and records of past events.
  • The ability to create a variety of configurations and to obtain an intelligent analysis of the different variables involved which affect manoeuvres during the mooring process.
  • Display of the data on different devices and platforms.

BAS modules

The BAS has a flexible configuration, meaning that it can be adapted to suit the specific conditions and needs of each port by personally configuring a series of modules to monitor the different elements involved in the berthing and unberthing manoeuvres.

Dockmoor-BM: Berthing and get unberthing monitoring

The Dockmoor-BM berthing and unberthing monitoring module enables precise measuring of the distance, bow to stern speed and angle of the ship with respect to the port fender system.

All these parameters are used to build a scale image of the boat, its manoeuvres, the dock and its defences in real time. It also allows alerts to be configured and data history to be created for its analysis with the aim of improving the berthing process.

Dockmoor-MS: Mooring stress Monitoring

The Dockmoor-MS module monitors an essential part of the mooring process, such as measuring the tension that the mooring lines can withstand; taking into account parameters such as the tension of the rope lines, the hook status (open/closed) or the compression of the fenders.

The system is based on bolts with integrated load cells in the quick release mooring hooks, meaning that all data can be checked in real-time and alarms set up to issue a warning in the event of overload.

On the other hand, in the case of needing to measure other factors, additional configurations can be established, adapted to the needs of each customer. This module can also be combined with other complementary modules.

Dockmoor-HDT: Diagnostic module

The Hardware Diagnostic Tool (HDT) provides information on the status of all of the physical elements involved in approach and mooring manoeuvres, whether these are situated inside the port facilities or in a remote position.

This control system functions on the basis of communication by means of UDP protocol between the application and the other devices, and can be configured to collect, interpret and analyse the specific data of every mechanism required by the customer.

Some of the hardware elements that allow a diagnosis to be performed are:

  • Loading arms
  • Load cells
  • Laser measuring devices
  • Control panels
  • Weather sensors
  • Oceanographic sensors

Dockmoor-ER: Environmental conditions monitoring

The Dockmoor-ER provides for a large number of configurations, from small sensors to complex compact weather stations capable of analysing any environmental parameter and generating a real-time image using the data obtained.

This module allows parameters such as ambient and water temperature, wind speed and direction, wave height and frequency, humidity and atmospheric pressure to be monitored. The configuration can also be adapted to the specific needs of each facility, with the addition of other measurements such as the degree of visibility or the level of solar radiation.

Dockmoor-FP: Fender performance monitoring

The Dockmoor-FP is specifically designed to measure fender deflection during the last stages of approach and mooring.

During this process, the real-time parameters are measured, represented and archived to enable the precise establishment of visual and audio alarms in the event of excessive deformation or deviation of any of the fenders.

Dockmoor-LD: Monitoring loading arm drift

In the event of having to measure the loading arm drift during the mooring stage, the Dockmoor-LD module must be installed and configured.

This module enables the configuration of visual and audio alarms for deviations falling outside the range of each loading arm. All of these measurements are taken and represented in real time during the actual manoeuvre; however, they are also archived for later consultation and analysis.

Dockmoor-RR: remote control of quick release hooks

The Dockmoor-RR is composed of a series of interactive screens and a control desk from which to monitor and manage all Quick Release Hooks (QRH).

As well as the above, this module includes all of the elements necessary to release the hooks either locally and/or by remote control, such as: cables and wires, communication boxes, actuators or control panels, making this one of the most complete and advanced installations.

Dockmoor-WEB: monitoring by means of web server

One of the fundamental elements of the BAS is the Dockmoor-WEB or monitoring module by means of a web server.

Thanks to the web server, the browser can be used to access the application from any point, by means of either LAN networks or simply the Internet, meaning that the BAS system can be accessed from all kinds of devices, such as computers, tablets and smartphones.
