Last Thursday 20 July, the Port Authority of Tarragona’s conference room hosted the first Smart Digital Port workshop, organised by the Foundation Tarragona 2017 Smart Mediterranean City, with the collaboration of the Port of Tarragona, State Ports and Repsol.
The event gathered a large number of industry professionals, and experts in logistics, new technologies and port administration. The objective was to address issues related to the digital transformation of ports through speeches and round tables, highlighting the development and implementation of these new technologies, an important channel to achieve more sustainable and efficient port logistics. Smart ports are the goal.
Rubén Marín Gallego, general manager of the Port Authority of Avilés, and Juan Diego Pérez Freire, general manager of the Port Authority of A Coruña, focused the first round table on the role of smart applications in small-sized ports. Up until just a few years ago, these ports were still behind in technology, but they have increased their competitiveness thanks to their commitment to working with technology.
Focused on saving energy and clean energies, the Green Port table’s principal actor was Ignacio Álvarez-Ossorio, general manager of the PA of Huelva, and Joan Basora, manager of Corporate Development and Sustainability for the Port Authority of Tarragona. The last table was focused on synchromodality, with the participation of Catalina Grimalt, general assistant manager of Organisation and Internal Resources for the Port Authority of Barcelona.
Lastly, Pablo Coto Millán, dean of the Faculty of Economic and Business Science at the University of Cantabria, summarised conclusions, speaking of digital transformation and future trends for ports.
